No DHCP service, no access to startup page

Hi there,

I have been trying to install the trial version. FirstSpot starts fine but even though DHCPservice.exe is running on the server (XP Pro) the client PC (XP Pro connected to the private interface by x-over cable) does not get an IP. When I plug in the IP manually, redirection to the 10.20.7.1:5788 works but the page is not found (404). Any ideas? I am including the ipconfig /all outputs as well as the config.ini file.

Can you post the trace.txt file under dhcp subdirectory?

Also, why the IP address looks garbled in the client PC (as below)?

Hi there,

I am attaching the beginning and the end of the trace.txt file. It seems that it tries all the 254 addresses but fails each time.

As far as the garbled IP address on my client PC (Acer laptop) I have no idea. It has always been like that. To be safe I connected the server PC to a different desktop (IP address appears fine) client but nothing changed. It failed to get an IP address by DHCP as well.

It seems that you have installed ipv6 on your client machines.

Please uninstall it first otherwise DHCP will not work.

Microsoft IPv6 was indeed enabled on my laptop. I disabled it (unchecked the box in the connection properties) but nothing changed. The desktop machines did not have this enabled, or I am maybe missing something.

Any other ideas? I would very much like to make this work.

In order to narrow down the case, please try to uninstall ipv6 first.
open command prompt, type "ipv6 uninstall" and see if you can obtain an ip address afterwards.

You might also want to put a switch/hubs like the following:

internet --- firstspot --- switch/hubs --- client

In addition, why the default gateway of your private interface is set to 10.20.7.1 (3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC)? This is NOT the default setting of Firstspot.

Hi again,

I uninstalled IPv6 from the client PC but nothing changed. So I decided to start over. I set up a new server (W2K SP4). Now DHCP works fine. I get redirected to the "welcome" screen, I logon and then see the "it works" page.

The problem starts after that. No matter which web page I am trying to access, the "it works" page is the only thing I get. Not even the "free" sites work. And the strangest of all, the same happens on the server PC as well. Ever page is redirected to the "it works" page.

Any ideas?

Are you using Loopback adapter as your Public Network Interface? If that is the case, it is normal. See chapter 2 of firstspot_guide.pdf for details.

If you still have problems, please post your config.ini file and ipconfig/all dump again.
