Post subject: Installed and started OK - But no redirection of client

Hello I have just setup the software, and on testing the client via the AP I am not getting any browser redirection when opening a webpage (no internet or firstspot access in the client machine).
Firstspot is started, no problems.
The client is getting an appropriate IP from first spot (via the AP)
Here is a snippet from ipconfig /all on the client:
Dhcp enabled Yes
Autoconfiguration enabled Yes
IP Address 10.20.7.210
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 10.20.7.1
DHCP Server 10.20.7.1
DNS Server 210.55.12.1 [as on the external network adaptor]

Routing and remote access is started
Apache service is started
Everything looks happy to my naive eyes, so any ideas what the issue might be?

It should be related offloading problem. Please check out readme.rtf for instruction to turn off offloading.

If you still have problems, please post your ipconfig/all dump.

Hi, I agree it does sound like that sort of problem. The network adaptor doesn’t have this sort of option. In the assumption that it might but might not have a control for it in the generic XP driver set, I upgraded it to the latest set of drives (Realtek RTL8139/810x Family) – yes more options but not the ones I was looking for. Not the trick.
I checked the disableTaskOffload parameter in the registery. Didn’t exist, so added it with a parameter of 1. Overkill, but just to make sure. Not the trick.

So... Here is the ipconfig /all of the firstspot host. Any futher ideas?:
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name: TESTDESKTOP
Primary Dns Suffix: firstspot.org
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled: Yes
DNS Suffix Search List: firstspot.org

Ethernet adapter OutboundNetCard:

210.55.12.2

I believe you change the Preferred DNS server IP for the Private Network settting (under DHCP tab in Configuration Manager) in FirstSpot, right?

Also, your InternalNetCard DNS setting is a bit strange, why DNS Server is 210.20.7.1?

Please do the following in the client side:

nslookup
set d2
apple.com 210.55.12.1

post the output, plus the config.ini file.

Sorry there was a typo the internalNetCard DNS Server is 10.20.7.1
So its just getting the DNS from firstspot which is set to 0.0.0.0 which means it gets it from the externalNetCard which is 210.55.12.1
The nslookup produces:
Default Server: firstspot.org
Address:10.20.7.1

The following (which im guessing checks the dns server can find the apple. com address?):
set d2
apple.com 210.55.12.1

this produces a lot of stuff (how do you get the cmd output into a text file so you dont need to copy-type it?). But down the bottom it says:

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: apple.com
Address: 17.254.3.183

The 210.55.12.1 DNS address is the local ADSL providers DNS, and its fine. The client is getting this address via firstspot without a problem (according to the ipconfig posted earlier).

Hi

Did you set DNS for your client manually? If so, firstspot will not route those DNS packets because of security reason.

If you want to use external DNS server for your clients, please set it under the dhcp tab in config man.

If this is not the case, try to use back 5788 for the authentication port. (Is there any other app. listening on port 80?)

let me know if there is still any problem

Jason

Actually I just worked out the problem. Very silly. The homepage of the browser was on the free list. It does give me a warning though to make sure potential homepages are not on the free list, otherwise clients will have a similar problem.

Thats it really [blush]
Thanks for your help.

Actually i should add, that this seems to only be a problem when firstspot has been restarted. ie the first time a mac address hits the firstspot server. Once you have been there, it will open with a free website as the homepage. A problem for new clients only - which is when you really dont want problems :-)

What is your "exact" home page of the browser? Also, what browser are you using?

We are unable to reproduce your problem. Note that unless your home page is https based, your problem is not supposed to occur.
