Post subject: Need to limit session duration for each connected device

Hi
I Need to limit session duration for each connected device by MAC address. Its for a coffee shop that wants a tech solution, all users kicked off after n minutes. They get 1 person on a table meant for 4, hogging the wifi for 4 hours and spend is 1 coffee.
Can this be done as prepaid, free, and postpaid?

Many thanks

Phil

Yes, this can be done.

Just go to Configuration Manager -> Users, create an username with Access Minutes limit set to say 30 minutes. This particular username will be disconnected after 30 minutes of usage.

Hi

This sounds close but it is not what we need. We need to not have to create accounts. We need an unattended system. We want to set a blanket setting that
1. Any traffic that passes through gets a set period then gets kicked out
2.The MAC address is recorded so that if it gets kicked out, and tries to connect again within 3 to 4 hours, it will be denied.
3. After the ban period, it is allowed to connect again.

Many thanks

Phil

You can take advantage of our self sign-up feature. Please configure as follow:

1) set "Initial access minutes for self sign-up users" under Authentication Server to say 60 minutes

2) turn on "Enforce restriction on self sign-up accounts" and "Time elapsed before the same machine can sign up again"

Now, user needs perform a self sign-up first before he can access. The advantage of this is that you can collect useful information from the client (optional). Note that FirstSpot will restrict the client self sign-up frequency so that he won't abuse the system. For more information about the above settings, refer to chapter 3 of firstspot_guide.pdf for details.

Thanks for that Alan, sounds good, one last thing. I just downloaded the trial version but I need to work on a 64 bit windows OS. Do you have a 64 bit version I can try.

Thank you very much for your help

Currently, FirstSpot runs on 32bit Windows only. See http://patronsoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2638 for more information.
