I am evaluating FirstSpot 6.0.5 and I am having a few problems. If I provide a few facts and figures would you please point me in the right direction.
I have two NICs on a Win 2003 machine: one internal plus one external going through an ISA server and a router to our ISP. The LAN card is 10.20.7.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 - no other entries. The Internet card is 10.217.234.44 subnet 255.255.255.0. This card also has a Default Gateway and a DNS - both 10.217.234.1.
I can get Config Manager to run and Wireless clients are picking up a DHCP address OK but will only show the login page if I type the URL. There are no LAN setting in the client browser and I cannot connect to the internet or the Excetion Free websites from the client.
I tried setting up ICS on the Internet card but failed because Routing & Remote access was enabled. I disabled this, re-booted and found that R&RA came back up as Manual and was enabled again!
Offload settings are disabled on both cards.
I notice that the clients are reporting the FirstSpot server (10.20.7.1) as their Default Gateway and DNS server which is different to the way I have the card configured. If I change the card to match then Config Manager gives me an error about configuring DNS on my Internet Interface Card.
I can connect to the internet from the FirstSpot server but it is extremely slow. |

First, you might want to re-download the latest FirstSpot version at http://patronsoft.com/firstspot/download_trial.html to perform the trial. Please perform an uninstall/reinstall (instead of an upgrade which you would normally do in a production system).
Couple of observations:
1) Please try to keep most of the FirstSpot setting as default, as least initially. This will simplify the trial process
2) Try not to modify ICS or RRAS manually. FirstSpot should do everything correctly for you. BTW, only Windows Vista and Windows 7 will use ICS. All other Windows will use RRAS.
3) check the stability of your DNS server. You can use the command nslookup
4) If you still encounter similar issues after reinstall, please check out http://patronsoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1191 _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Latest version of FirstSpot installed on a newly configured WinXP machine. Network cards configures as before but everything else left as default.
Redirector, Dispatcher, DHCP and RRAS services running.
Running nslookup from the client results in: Default Server: firstspot.org. Address: 10.20.7.1
Running nslookup from the Firstspot server results in: Can't find server name for address 10.217.234.1: No response from server. Default servers are not available etc
There are no event viewer error messages if FirstSpot starts the RRAS service. However if I start RRAS manually I get an error message "Unable to contact a DHCP server. The automatic Private IP address 169.254.1.65 will be assigned to dial-in clients."
I can only get the logon page by typing in http:firstspot.org. Action cancelled when trying to access Yahoo.com after logging in. |

Something wrong with your RRAS. Please post the text output of the below commands (issued in the FirstSpot machine):
ipconfig/all
nslookp
set d2

Your IP setting looks okay.
Your nslookup output is not right. Please re-issue the below commands exactly:
nslookup
set d2

Still is not right. Maybe you can issue:
nslookup apple.com
in a one line instead. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

It is clear that your DNS has problem. Can you fix it?
BTW, you should be able to ping 10.217.234.1 from FirstSpot machine. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

I thought it might be DNS but I dont have a lot of experience on the subject. I can ping 10.217.234.1 OK.
I have another internet connection on a different subnet going through the same default gateway. The internal (LAN) card on this system points to an internal DNS server and works fine.
The DNS entries on this other system are different to the FirstSpot system in that DNS is configured on the LAN card and not on the Public Card whereas the Firstspot system it is the other way round.
Is it possible to set up DNS on the firstspot server and point one of the cards to it |

You can modify NYCC' DNS to other DNS. Please make sure its work fine by testing with the nslookup command.
Also, don't change LAN's IP setting. It is automatically handled by FirstSpot. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |
