Post subject: time lost by client

This has started to happen over the past few weeks. Customers have come in claiming that they lost time. Not just a little bit of time but lots. just this morning I think was the most clear evidence that something in fact is happening in FirstSpot that I can't explain.

Yesterday, a customer bought 10 hours of time. They used the computer for 43 minutes. I pulled up their log and saw only 1 login and for 43 minutes, yet there account showed 0 minutes left. The shortest timeframe we sell is 1 hours and they didn't even use that, according to the suer log.

Any ideas of what I'm looking for here?

Post subject: Still a problem

Are there any suggestions? I have people that have come in and paid for 40 hours of usage. They use there computer for 1 hours, log out, come back the next day and it is all gone. Even if they forgot to log off and the system failed to log them out automatically, there is no way they can lose 40 hour in a single day.

What am I looking for? This should be a simple calucation between UNIX time stamps for beginning and ending times, but there appear to be something greater happening at times.

Do you have a simple reproducible test case?

Post subject: That's my problem

I wish it was reproducible. Then I could perhaps figure it out on my own. Unfortunately, it happens at completely random times and with different users on different OS and everything. I'm having to assume that it is not a user issue because of the severity of the lost time (or sudden bandwidth accumulation) that must be db related. I was hoping this has happened to someone else and that there might be something to look for with regard to the functions that record and calculate the useage for the db.

At the very least, try to obtain the username that is having problem, and then capture the correct log file firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log (should be under FirstSpot\log directory if you haven't restarted FirstSpot, otherwise go into FirstSpot\log\archive). Also, please describe the user attributes that you set for that particular username.

Post subject: Challenging

Ok, I have had 5 people come and state that they have either lost time, exceeded (I mean WAY OVER) their download limit or even one that came with originally 6 hours, later that day had 32 hours, and then this morning had 1 hour.

I'm digging through the logs, but I'm not sure even what I'm looking for. I can find the person login and logout. Everything appears to be normal. Is there something in particular that I should be trying to find?

Most of our clients have account expiration set to duration and download quota. These are the clients having problems. Most of the machines are Win 2k or higher, though there is a win98se out there too.

I don't know what to look for and don't want to have to dump huge log files on you. What should I be comparing or looking for?

Well, maybe you can paste portion of the log that shows a problematic user account login (and logout, if available).

Can you also post the first 300 lines of firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log? We want to know more information about your configuration.

It looks like there are some issues with the database access during logout. There are 2 possibilities:

1) bug in FirstSpot code
2) database problem. In particular, table or index corruption

BTW, what is the datasource you are currently using?

Post subject: Starting 300 lines

The lines that have always bothered me are:
04/02/2008 18:52:51 ** restartRRAS: waiting lock

This did not happen when the system was first installed. When I completely rebuild the computer and start fresh, I don't have this for the first few times that I run FirstSpot, but it always comes back eventually and then stays with me. Not sure where to start or if that has anything to do with anything.

The RRAS message shouldn't create any problem, please ignore it.

So what is your feedback on my database question?

Post subject: Code or Db

Well, really the only two option are code and Db. I thought the Db could be the problem so on Monday I started with a fresh install of the program (default Db provided with your program) and then used the CSV import for the users. Same day started having the same problems.

This was a fresh, install from scratch Win Xp Pro on a Pent 4, 3Ghz with 1G ram. I can't see anything in between a person that logs on in the morning with over 900 minutes and then 2 hours later logs on again with less than 60 min. The only way I can imagine that is a logout problem is if the program is incorrectly storing the UNIX timestamp value and making a problem with the math. I also can't see how a fresh database can become corrupt so quickly by just watching it.

But the key is : did you somehow access the dbf (and the related mdx and inf) files using 3rd party tools? See
http://patronsoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1514 for a guideline.

Post subject: Nope

I only access the data through SQL in PHP and never write anything....only read.

I only read data to make it easier to look at the user and url data. That is it.
