FirstSpot on WS2K8 Std

Just installed FirstSpot on Windows Server 2008 Std 32bit. The install went ok but I'm having trouble getting to the internet from FirstSpot. I get a DHCP address from FirstSpot and RRAS is running. I get the sample login page as well. I can ping and connect out the Internet NIC with no problem.

The problem is I can't ping www.google.com or any other site on the Free list. I get a DNS response but no ping. Even after I use the sample login account, I get a dns reply but replies to pings.

I can ping the server's internet port IP address but not the default gateway.

It looks like a routing problem within FirstSpot. What should be used for routing? RRAS or ICS? I can't tell.

Can you run the following commands (start FirstSpot first) and post the output:

Also, please post your firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log under FirstSpot\log directory.

We modify the startup sequence a bit to cater to your situation. Please download the patch at:

Alan,

I stopped FirstSpot and copied over the replacement executable to the dispatcher folder then started FirstSpot.

No change in behavior though. From the sample splash page I can't ping any of the free sites. I get DNS replies but no ping replies.

Same goes for using the sample login. DNS reply but no ping. I also can't ping past the internet interface. I can the interface itself but not past it.

For some strange reasons, your Internet Network Interface is still not included.

Please run the below commands and post the output:

You might also want to test to see FirstSpot works after running the above commands.

Alan,

I was finally able to resolve the problem.

The NIC's on the VM were sharing the same physical NIC card in the server. This was ok as far as the server was concerned but RRAS didn't like it at all. It would see one but not both.

Since my server has two real adapters, I put one Virtual NIC on each adapter. I made sure that both virtual NIC's showed up in RRAS on the VM before I reinstalled FirstSpot. Once FirstSpot was reinstalled it saw both adapters properly and now the routing works.

Thanks for the help. Looking at RRAS was what pointed me in the right direction.
