We use Vista Business. We tested with both firewall on and off.
BTW, our testing methodology is to try to use default settings as much as possible, so that it will be closer to a majority of the users setup... _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

I'm just noticing and hoping to find a bug in some network cards on a FS server that don't like the IPv6 coming out of Vista clients. This might be something to look at with the FirstHop driver. For now, I'm requiring all Vista clients to turn off IPv6 since they really don't need it. _________________ Greg |

Well, I tested with Vista Ultimate on a desktop computer wired right into the network (how it connects to the network shouldn't matter at all), and it worked like a charm. I have a laptop now that I'm going to test with and see what happens.
What version of Vista have you been using to test, Alan? Is it Ultimate, or something else? Every user that has had a problem here is using Home (either Basic or Premium, depending on where they bought their computer). |

ALright... I just spent two hours messing around with a vista laptop - Vista Business. I tried everything I could think of to get it to work, and nothing.
Disabled firewall
Added firstspot address to Trusted Sites
Moved Security to minimum allowed
Turned off the Protected Mode on all zones
Disabled IPv6 in network configuration
Ran IE as Administrator
Tried Firefox - still no go
Able to ping the firstspot box and internet sites with no problem
There might be a couple of other things I did try, but nothing worked. If you have any ideas of what I could try to make this work, I'd appreciate it.
I was reading the monowall forums, and there was a note that the MTU might be too big. Is that something I should be testing on the firstspot box, do you think? |

OK, I don't know the answer but this has to move us closer: I plugged the exact same computer into the switch on the wifi side of the firstspot box and it works perfectly. There must be some specific security or settings on the wireless connections in Vista that it doesn't apply to the wired connection... any thoughts from anyone? |

Alan, were you testing this with a wireless connection, or did you have it wired into the firstspot network? |

Using your wireless connection, please:
1) post
ipconfig/all
route print
nslookup apple.com
from your Vista client
2) try to access FirstSpot login page directly ( see http://www.patronsoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1088 ). Does it work? Please describe what you see. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Strange. The client's default gateway and DHCP server are different. Actually, the client DNS, default gateway and DHCP server should all be the FirstSpot Private IP.
Are you sure there is no other DHCP server in your network, or the client attach to the correct AP?
Can you also post your:
1) config.ini
2) ipconfig/all issued from the FirstSpot machine _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Those settings are the same on an XP box that works fine. The DHCP server is different because I use a different DHCP server on that network - the FirstSpot one kept crapping out. The wifi network I have this connected to consists of 5 APs spread out over 4 physical locations, which all come back to a Nortel management box (which is now the DHCP server), which routes traffic from these APs on their own VLAN back to the Firstspot box (there are other SSIDs on these APs as well which get routed to different VLANs based on the SSID or MAC address of the computer, which is controlled at the Nortel box). XP Machines have no problem with this configuration, and a wired connection with a Vista machine works fine.
I'll put the config.ini and ipconfig from the firstspot up a little later. I'm not at work today. |

We are unable to reproduce your problem so far.
Still, I insist on having you setting up your problematic wireless Vista in a simpler environment. Just a FirstSpot server + plain AP (i.e. no VLAN) + wireless Vista to see whether you can reproduce this issue. This can help us tremendously to narrow down the issue. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

I haven't given up on this yet (though I have downloaded v5 and am trying to find some time to set it up and test it as well), but I am doing further testing. Microsoft gave us a free incident ticket to help, but thus far they haven't been much help at all. :) I appreciate the efforts you're making, Alan, since it probably isn't a FirstSpot problem at all. I've tried with Windows Vista Ultimate now, too, and the same thing happens. I am configuring the AP for a secured access SSID as well, and will see if the same thing happens there (I suspect there is a security difference for Vista whether it connects to an unsecured versus a secured network).
I'll keep people updated here, and if anyone has any other suggestions feel free to make them. I would appreciate the assistance. :) |

So the problem happens for both secured and unsecured wireless network? Also a terminology clarification, what is "secured access SSID"? You mean secured wireless network (like WEP or WPA-PSK)? _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

I am attempting to test it with the same AP but with a secured wireless network (I'll start with WEP, then move to WPA). I haven't had a chance to program up the AP yet, though.
When I say "secured access SSID" what I mean is that my AP can be programmed with multiple SSIDs - the one currently set up for wifi access is unsecured, but I am going to set up a secured one on the same AP (WEP, and then WPA, as above) for testing to see if there is a difference for the way Vista handles a secured versus an unsecured wireless network.
I'm hoping to get the AP programmed and tested today, so I will report back once I have done that test.
Again, thanks for the assistance :) |

Hi Guys lets not kid ourselves this is a huge problem and it is ps's problem Vista love or hate it is the operating system of to day. This log on problem may be caused by the O/S but that is not going to change we operate over 30 aps, and about 20 km end to end at present ands are growing, but 90% of our calls are now vista related and in particular erratic or non log on. This has to be fixed by ps. The problem we have is we are now committed to ps, and need to get it sorted. We do not want to use other software because up until now ps have always sorted our problems for the most part very well. |
