We really don't know.

Your problem is that the our DNS server (named) fail to start. This rarely happens, and I suspect something is not "clean" in your Windows machine.

You can try to "ISC BIND" manually to see whether there is more informative error message. Again, your best bet is to install FirstSpot in a "clean" Windows.

Okay, I will start from scratch.

Which is better for FirstSpot, Win 2003 Enterprise or Win XP Pro?

Both XP and 2003 should be fine. But XP is a bit easier to configure sometimes.

As requested I did a fresh install of XP Pro.

Are you sure your DNS server 66.80.130.23 or 66.80.131.5 is working?

Try the below commands in the FirstSpot machine:

nslookup apple.com 66.80.130.23
nslookup apple.com 66.80.131.5

and post the result.

Your DNS looks okay.

Not really sure about your problem. What did you do last time when you install and start v4.0.4 successfully?

The 4.0.4 install went without problems. Just follwed the procedure outlined in the install readme file. It just worked.

As a little experiment I un-installed 4.0.7 and installed 4.0.4 back to the machine and 4.0.4 fired up with out problem. I did not re-install the operating system.

I still get the apache.exe error originally described in this thread with 4.0.4.

In that case, we definitely want to investigate deeper.

Please reinstall 4.0.7, and then email us instruction to access your machine remotely. You can use Windows Remote Desktop Connection or RealVNC.

Well, we investigate your machine extensively. It is not exactly a "clean" Windows! It seems that your Windows "Service Control Manager" is not working correclty.

The correct steps are:
1) no anti-virus installed (at least before testing FirstSpot)
2) Just install Windows and SP2. Then turn off Windows update immediately. (Contrary to what Microsoft said, the only sure way to maintain the patch is to do it manually. If your Windows keep changing, it is very hard to troubleshoot the issue)
3) Make sure basic service like TCP/IP is working. Then install FirstSpot

BTW, have you paid for FirstSpot license yet, or are you using the trial version?

Okay, I will reinstall XP and follow the steps you have outlined.

I have paid for First Spot. I just did not copy the licence to the most recent install.

I'll let you know how it works out.

As requested I deleted the partitions on the hard drive and started from scratch.

Installed Win XP Pro Ver 2002 SP2

Disabled Windows Update During Initial startup

Verified TCP/IP is working

Followed setup procedure in the manual (offloading, remote access and so on)

Installed 4.0.7

Same Error

“Fail to start Named BIND DNS Server”

Well, this is strange. Is the VNC still on?
